ChatGPT’s mobile app isn’t just popular. It’s dominating the AI chatbot market on iOS and Android.
Since its release in May 2023, the app has pulled in an eye-popping $2 billion in global consumer spending, according to new data from app analytics firm Appfigures.
That’s roughly 30 times more than the combined lifetime mobile earnings of competitors like Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
A Record-Breaking 2025 for ChatGPT
The pace this year has been nothing short of explosive.
From January to July 2025 alone, ChatGPT’s mobile app generated $1.35 billion in revenue – a 673% jump compared to the same period last year, when it earned $174 million.
That works out to nearly $193 million per month on average, up from just $25 million a month in 2024.
By comparison:
App | 2025 YTD Revenue | Monthly Average | Share of ChatGPT’s Revenue |
---|---|---|---|
ChatGPT | $1.35B | $193M | 100% |
Grok | $25.6M | $3.6M | 1.9% |
Claude | Data not disclosed | — | — |
Copilot | Data not disclosed | — | — |
Even its closest mobile rival, Grok, is making about 53 times less than ChatGPT.
Why Mobile Matters for AI
While these numbers only cover consumer spending through app stores, they paint a clear picture: mobile is where ChatGPT is winning hearts (and wallets).
Yes, AI companies also sell subscriptions on their websites and offer API services, but the mobile apps are often the first touchpoint for everyday users who download them directly from the App Store or Google Play.
Grok’s Late Start
Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, entered the market much later.
It launched in November 2023 without dedicated mobile apps, working only through the X (formerly Twitter) platform.
It wasn’t until January 2025 that Grok’s standalone iOS app became available, with the Android version following in March.
By then, ChatGPT already had a massive head start.
Spending Per Download: ChatGPT Still Leads
According to Appfigures:
- ChatGPT: $2.91 per download (global)
- Claude: $2.55 per download
- Grok: $0.75 per download
- Copilot: $0.28 per download
In the U.S., ChatGPT earns an even more impressive $10 per download, with the American market making up 38% of its total revenue. Germany follows with 5.3%.
Download Numbers Tell the Same Story
So far, ChatGPT has been downloaded an estimated 690 million times worldwide, more than 17 times Grok’s total of 39.5 million installs.
Average monthly downloads in 2025 are now 45 million, up from about 16 million in the same period last year – a 180% increase.
Top lifetime download markets:
- India – 13.7% of installs
- United States – 10.3% of installs
In 2025 alone, the app has seen 318 million downloads, nearly triple last year’s pace.
The Bottom Line
ChatGPT’s mobile app has turned into a revenue juggernaut, not just outpacing, but utterly dwarfing its rivals.
With billions in spending, hundreds of millions of downloads, and global reach across major markets, it’s clear that ChatGPT has set the standard for what an AI chatbot can achieve on mobile.
The challenge now? Whether any competitor can close that massive gap.
