Anthropic experienced a widespread outage on Monday morning. Thousands of users could not access Claude.

The disruption affected both Claude.ai and Claude Code. Most users ran into errors when trying to log in, and others could not log out or load the platform.

The Claude API continued to function normally, however.

The Core Issue

Anthropic addressed the issue through its official status page. The company stated that the disruption was tied to login and logout systems.

In simple terms, users could not authenticate or access the service.

Anthropic did not disclose the exact cause, but it confirmed that it had identified the problem. It also stated that a fix was being implemented.

Over the weekend, Claude saw a sharp increase in popularity. The app climbed to the top of the Apple App Store rankings.

It overtook OpenAI’s ChatGPT after spending a long period outside the top 20.

Such spikes in demand often stress infrastructure. As more users attempt to sign up and log in, authentication systems face higher loads.

Political Dispute

Last week, Donald Trump instructed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s products. This decision followed a dispute involving the Department of Defense.

The disagreement centered on safeguards within Anthropic’s AI models. Specifically, the company restricts use in mass domestic surveillance and deployment in fully autonomous weapons.

These restrictions weren’t well-received by the Department of Defense. In response, Pete Hegseth stated that Anthropic could be designated as a supply-chain threat.

However, Anthropic clarified that it has not received any formal notice regarding such a designation.
