Apple Lets Developers Access AI Models Offline

At WWDC 2025, Apple introduced the ‘Foundation Models framework’, which allows developers to use Apple’s AI models directly on devices.

This focuses on speed, privacy, and offline access. Developers can now create smarter apps that work without an internet connection.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s VP of Software Engineering, shared the news during the keynote. He described how the framework will allow apps to offer intelligent features while keeping data on the user’s device.

No Need for Internet Connection

The Foundation Models framework lets apps use AI without relying on the cloud. This means users get faster responses and can also access smart features even when offline.

For example, the quiz app ‘Kahoot’ can now create study tests from a student’s notes, on the device itself.

No data leaves the phone, and cloud servers are not used. This enhances both privacy and performance.

User Privacy

Apple keeps AI processing on the device to avoid sending sensitive information to the cloud.

This update is especially helpful for personal apps. Take ‘Day One’, a journaling app developed by Automattic.

It uses Apple’s new framework to analyze entries and suggest topics, all without sending data elsewhere.

Apps that handle health, education, or personal memories will benefit the most.

Simple For Developers

Apple made this framework easy to implement. According to the company, developers can begin using it with just three lines of code.

The framework supports ‘Swift’, Apple’s programming language. That means developers can quickly add AI features to existing apps with minimal effort.

Real Apps Are Already Using It

Some apps are already using the Foundation Models framework. AllTrails, a hiking app, now recommends personalized trails using on-device AI.

It does not need to connect to a server. It works even in remote areas with no signal.

Developers Can Start Today

The Foundation Models framework is now available to developers through the Apple Developer Program.

A public beta will launch early next month, and developers can test the tools and start building new features right away.

Apple is encouraging developers to explore the possibilities the framework supports, like guided generation, tool calling, and more.
