Brief History

Grok is an AI chatbot developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company. The name was inspired by the Martian word “grok” from a 1961 science fiction novel, Stranger in a Strange Land.

It was launched in 2023 to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT as a response to a demand for an unbiased chatbot. Grok was unveiled in November 2023, and its first major release, Grok-1, was trained from scratch.

Elon Musk criticized OpenAI for becoming too closed and commercial, thus sparking his motivation to launch a more “truth-seeking” model. The team behind Grok is made up of past employees from DeepMind, OpenAI, and Tesla.
