GitHub Copilot has now surpassed 20 million all-time users. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the achievement during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday.Ā

A GitHub spokesperson confirmed that the number reflects the total number of users who have tried the product since its launch.

This is a significant gap from just three months prior, when GitHub reported 15 million users. That means five million people have tried Copilot in a short span.Ā

While the number includes trial users and not active monthly figures, it is a sign of growing interest in AI coding assistance.

Enterprise adoption is also accelerating. According to Microsoft, 90% of Fortune 100 companies now use GitHub Copilot.

This figure is a 75% increase in enterprise growth since the previous quarter.

Developers Use Case

GitHub Copilot assists developers by suggesting code, reviewing syntax, and catching errors. It uses machine learning to also generate live suggestions.

As a result, developers spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time solving core problems.

The tool supports several programming languages and integrates easily into development environments like Visual Studio Code.

For many users, Copilot functions like an intelligent co-pilot, enhancing productivity without replacing human input.

While new developers often find the tool helpful for learning, experienced engineers use it to streamline routine work.

Profit Margins

GitHub Copilot is not only popular but profitable. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that Copilot now generates more revenue than GitHub did when Microsoft acquired it in 2018.Ā

That stems from a strong demand for enterprise-grade AI solutions, which developers and organizations are willing to pay for in subscriptions and licenses.

Its wide profit margin is a direct result of Copilot’s focus on a niche. This success places GitHub Copilot among the most commercially viable AI tools currently on the market.

Major Competition

Cursor, a fast-growing competitor, is gaining momentum. In March, Bloomberg reported Cursor had over one million daily users and $200 million in annual recurring revenue.

Today, its revenue exceeds $500 million. The company has hired top talent from several AI startups and released features similar to Copilot.

Both platforms now include agents that can review code, detect bugs, and support more complex developer workflows.
