Google is rolling out Veo 3, its newest image-to-video model, in its Photos app. This tool allows users in the United States to convert still images into short video clips directly from the app.
Before now, Google Photos has long offered video generation. That relied on Veo 2, and it let users animate a photo with either subtle motion or a random effect.
The result was a six-second clip. However, the introduction of Veo 3 refines the process. Videos are shorter, lasting four seconds.
Yet the quality is higher, with smoother motion and improved detail. The model delivers a sharper, more natural look compared to its predecessor.
From Gemini To Photos
Veo 3 made its first appearance in May at Google’s I/O conference. In July, it became available through the Gemini app for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
Those users could generate three videos per day. And each video carried both visible and invisible watermarks to confirm it was AI-generated.
Now, Google has integrated the same technology into Photos.
Limited Use
Google will allow free use of Veo 3 in Photos, though with limits. Regular users can generate only a small number of clips.
Paid subscribers to AI Pro or AI Ultra will have more freedom, with additional video generations available.
However, the feature still lacks audio. For now, all clips are silent. Even so, Google views the update as a new way for people to enhance and relive their memories.
A Dedicated Creative Hub
The new model sits inside the Create tab, a recently added section of Google Photos. This hub highlights tools powered by AI.
It also offers several creative options beyond Veo 3:
- Remixing photos into new styles.
- Building collages.
- Making montages from selected images.
- Generating cinematic photos with a 3D effect.
- Creating GIFs from snapshots.
This collection positions Google Photos as more than just storage but a creative platform in its own right.
