OpenAI Plans “Sign In With ChatGPT” Feature for Other Apps

Updated:May 28, 2025

OpenAI is working on a new feature that may soon allow users to sign in to other apps using their ChatGPT account.

This will position the company to compete with tech giants like Google, Apple, and Microsoft. These companies already offer login tools that millions rely on every day. Now, OpenAI wants to join them.

A Large User Base

ChatGPT currently serves over 600 million users each month, due to its rapid growth. OpenAI now seeks to turn that momentum into a bigger use.

By allowing users to sign in to other apps with ChatGPT, the tech giant could offer a faster login process, provide a more personalized user experience, and, more importantly, keep users within its ecosystem.

This also creates new business opportunities. More integrations mean more uses for ChatGPT beyond chatting or coding.

Early Testing

Earlier this month, OpenAI launched a preview version of this login experience. The test took place inside Codex CLI, the company’s open-source tool for AI-assisted coding.

Developers had the option to connect their ChatGPT account (Free, Plus, or Pro) with their API account.

To encourage sign-ups, OpenAI offered incentives:

  • Plus users received $5 in API credits
  • Pro users received $50 in API credits

Developer Interest

OpenAI also published a form to gauge developer interest. It asked companies about their:

  • Weekly user base (from less than 1,000 to over 100 million)
  • Current use of OpenAI APIs
  • Existing pricing models for AI-powered features

Security Must Come First

Security remains a top concern. Logging in through ChatGPT will require strong safeguards. While OpenAI hasn’t shared full details, users can expect:

  • Encrypted logins
  • Two-factor authentication
  • Clear privacy policies

For this feature to succeed, users must feel safe. OpenAI knows this. Any rollout will likely include strong protections from day one.
