YouTube has announced a new AI feature to simplify video discovery. The platform is launching an AI search results carousel that resembles Google’s AI Overviews

This new feature is currently only available to YouTube Premium users in the United States.

The carousel appears at the top of search results and provides short, AI-generated descriptions along with video thumbnails.

The goal is to help users find relevant content more quickly. Its focus is on searches related to shopping, travel, and activities.

For example, if a user searches for “best beaches in Hawaii,” the carousel may display highlighted clips from videos.

These may show top snorkel spots, scenic coastlines, and tourist activities. Each clip includes a summary to help users decide what to watch.

How the Feature Works

The carousel uses AI to scan and summarize video content. Then, it selects key moments and provides a short description to help viewers quickly understand what each video offers.

This update aims to reduce the time users spend scrolling. Instead of viewing multiple thumbnails with little context, users now get a structured preview of top videos.

Impact on Creators

While the update benefits users, content creators are worried. YouTube creators depend on views and watch time to generate revenue.

The new carousel may reduce clicks on individual videos. If users find answers directly from the carousel, they may not view the full video.

This could lead to lower engagement and fewer ad impressions. A similar issue has occurred with Google Search’s AI Overviews.

News publishers have reported traffic losses due to AI summaries replacing direct links. Many creators fear the same trend may affect YouTube.

They rely heavily on discovery and viewer interaction. Any feature that limits direct video engagement could impact earnings.

YouTube’s Conversational AI Tool

Alongside the carousel, YouTube is also expanding its conversational AI tool. This tool first launched in 2023 for Premium users.

Now, it is being tested with selected non-Premium users. The tool uses large language models to assist viewers by providing video summaries, content recommendations, and answers to user questions by drawing on information on YouTube and across the web.

For example, if a user is watching a roller skate tutorial, the AI may ask if they want a summary or suggestions for similar content.

Users can also ask questions such as, “What song is in this video?” The AI responds with details like the track title, artist name, and genre.

A Useful Tool for Education and Learning

The conversational AI tool also supports educational use. Students can quiz themselves on academic videos.

Also, the tool can generate practice questions or explain complex ideas. This makes it easier for viewers to learn and review important concepts.

The AI responds based on the content being viewed. This makes the experience more relevant and accurate. It allows users to explore topics in greater depth without leaving the video.
