OpenAI has dismissed a senior policy executive following a discrimination complaint.
The departure has drawn attention because it occurred after internal disagreement over a planned ChatGPT feature known as “adult mode.”
Ryan Beiermeister
Ryan Beiermeister served as OpenAI’s vice president of product policy. In that role, she helped guide rules that shape how OpenAI’s products behave and what content they allow.
Her position placed her at the center of major product decisions. Policy leaders often review new features before launch; they assess safety, user impact, and long-term risk.
Before joining OpenAI, Beiermeister built a lengthy career in technology. Her LinkedIn profile shows she spent more than four years on Meta’s product team.
It also lists over seven years at Palantir. These roles involved large-scale platforms and complex governance issues.
Discrimination Allegation
According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI fired Beiermeister in January. The decision followed an accusation from a male colleague who alleged sex discrimination.
Beiermeister strongly rejected the claim. She told the Journal that the allegation was “absolutely false.”
“Adult Mode” Feature

The Journal reported that Beiermeister’s firing came after she criticized a planned ChatGPT feature called “adult mode.”
The proposed mode would introduce erotica into the chatbot experience. This would mark a significant change in how ChatGPT handles explicit content.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, has confirmed the feature is in development. Her role oversees OpenAI’s consumer-facing products.
She has told reporters the feature is expected to launch in the first quarter of this year.

Internal Concerns
Beiermeister was not alone in raising objections. According to the report, she and other employees expressed concern about how the “adult” feature could affect certain users.
These concerns focused on potential harm and unintended exposure. ChatGPT is widely used by students, professionals, and families.
Even limited changes can alter how safe or appropriate the product feels to different audiences.
Internal debate over such features is common in large technology firms. However, the timing of Beiermeister’s exit has drawn some speculation.
OpenAI’s Response
OpenAI has reportedly stated that Beiermeister went on a leave of absence before her termination.
The company also said she made “valuable contributions during her time at OpenAI.” It emphasized that her departure was not related to any concerns she raised while working at the company.
OpenAI has not shared additional information about the internal review or investigation.
Meanwhile, the planned “adult mode” feature remains scheduled for release this quarter.
