Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is restructuring its team and rebuilding key parts of its technology. Musk wants to fix what did not work the first time.

Three years after launching xAI, most of its original co-founders have left. The company also faces intense competition from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

xAI’s Original Founders

When xAI launched in 2023, eleven co-founders joined Musk to build a new AI research lab. Today, only two are left.

Recently, co-founders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang left the company. Musk then took to social media to address the situation.

In a post on X, he said the company “was not built right the first time.” Therefore, he believes rebuilding it from the ground up is necessary.

AI Coding Tools

The most immediate challenge for xAI involves AI coding tools. These tools help developers write, edit, and debug software with AI.

Currently, xAI’s competitors dominate this space. Anthropic offers Claude Code, and OpenAI provides Codex. Both tools have a strong standing among software developers.

Musk has openly acknowledged that xAI’s coding products lag behind these rivals. As a result, the company recently held an internal meeting to close that gap.

According to Musk, the team hopes to become more competitive by the middle of the year.

Coding Assistants

In the AI industry, coding assistants are more than experimental tools but a major revenue opportunity.

Developers rely on them daily. These systems help reduce errors, speed up development, and automate repetitive tasks. Consequently, companies often pay subscription fees to use them.

Because of this demand, AI labs see coding tools as an important business driver. For xAI, falling behind in this area creates both technical and financial pressure.

Therefore, improving these products has become a top priority.

xAI’s Grok

Earlier, xAI gained public attention through its chatbot, Grok. Unlike many competing chatbots, Grok initially operated with fewer restrictions.

Therefore, there was a surge of interest when X users quickly noticed it could generate content that other AI tools would block.

Interest, however, came with criticism. Many experts questioned whether such openness would benefit the company long-term.

Internal Shake-Up

About a month ago, eleven senior engineers left the company, including two additional co-founders.

Musk described it as part of restructuring the business for future growth. Executives from Tesla and SpaceX have reportedly helped review staff performance.

Their task is to evaluate employees and identify those who meet the company’s evolving standards.

Talent Search

Recently, Musk revealed that he and colleague Baris Akis are reviewing previously rejected job applications.

They want to identify strong candidates who may have been overlooked during earlier hiring rounds.

Musk even issued a public apology to applicants who never received responses.

New Hires

Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg recently joined the company from the startup Cursor. At Cursor, they led product engineering for AI coding tools.

Their experience could prove valuable as xAI strengthens its developer-focused products.

Cursor relies on external AI models to power its software. By contrast, xAI develops its own large language models.

This difference may have influenced their decision to join the company. Direct access to advanced models and computing resources often allows engineers to experiment more freely.

Macrohard

xAI has been developing a project known as Macrohard. Musk says the name serves as a humorous reference to Microsoft.

The project aims to create an AI agent capable of performing many digital tasks handled by white-collar workers.

For example, such a system could manage emails, organize files, analyze spreadsheets, and coordinate digital workflows.

But the progress has been uneven. The project’s leader, Toby Pohlen, left the company only weeks after taking the role. Later reports suggested the project had been paused.
