Roelof Botha is now a SpaceX board member. The former Sequoia Capital boss joined one of the world’s most powerful companies just days after its record-breaking IPO.
SpaceX filed the news with the SEC on Wednesday. The filing says Botha was appointed “to fill the existing vacancy on the Board.”
He’ll serve until the next annual shareholder meeting and will also sit on the board’s audit committee.
New Board Seat
SpaceX went public less than a week before this announcement and pulled off the largest IPO in history.
That’s a massive milestone for any company. With that kind of debut comes pressure to show investors the company is in good hands.
Enter Botha.
SpaceX praised his background in the filing, noting he brings “extensive public company experience along with a deep audit committee background.”
Roelof Botha

If you don’t know the name, here’s the quick version. Botha spent more than 20 years at Sequoia Capital, one of Silicon Valley’s most powerful venture firms.
He stepped down as its managing partner late last year. His exit came during a rough patch for the firm.
A Sequoia partner named Shaun Maguire had made controversial comments about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
There was backlash, and Botha eventually stepped away from his leadership role. But his reputation in the investing world remains rock solid.
Long History
Botha and Musk go way back. Musk hired Botha in 2000 to run finance at PayPal; both men are South African.
Botha joined PayPal in March of that year, just months before Musk was pushed out as CEO in September 2000.
Despite that bumpy history, the relationship held. Last year, Botha spoke warmly about Musk in a Fortune interview.
“I’ve known Elon for over 25 years,” Botha said. “He was the first person to offer me a job in America. He believed in me when I was an unknown student at Stanford.”
The Board
The board at SpaceX looks different from most public company boards. Musk holds more than 80% of the voting power. Shareholders have a very limited ability to challenge him.
He also controls all changes to the board’s makeup. So while Botha is joining a prestigious group, the power still sits firmly with Musk.
Botha joins a board that already includes Musk confidants Ira Ehrenpreis, Antonio Gracias, Steve Jurvetson, and Luke Nosek.
Also on the board are SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell, Google executive Donald Harrison, and venture capitalist Randy Glein. Musk serves as chairman.
With Botha added, the board now has nine directors.
Family Connection
The SEC filing also revealed that a family member of Botha’s has worked at SpaceX since January 2025.
They work on the enterprise operations team, and their compensation exceeded the $120,000 reporting threshold, though SpaceX noted it is “generally commensurate with their peers.”
SpaceX disclosed this to stay transparent with regulators and investors. It’s a standard requirement, but worth knowing.
