A group chat

OpenAI has released group chats for all ChatGPT users worldwide on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. The global rollout follows a limited pilot in Japan and New Zealand last week.

The new feature creates a shared space where people can plan, discuss, and create together. It moves ChatGPT from a one-to-one assistant to a group-friendly tool.

Users can coordinate trips, draft documents, compare options, and review research. At the same time, ChatGPT can provide summaries, answer questions, or stay silent until needed.

How it Works

To start a group chat, users tap the people icon and add participants directly or through a shared link. Each person then creates a short profile with a name, username, and photo.

Up to 20 people may join one conversation. However, adding a new person does not change older messages; instead, ChatGPT opens a new chat.

This design protects privacy and prevents confusion. OpenAI also notes that each user’s memory and personal settings remain private. These details do not merge with group activity.

When ChatGPT Joins

ChatGPT enters a group chat only when users ask it to. They can tag “ChatGPT” to request help.

The model can react with emojis and refer to profile photos when needed. These small touches aim to keep conversations clear and organized.

The global rollout is part of OpenAI’s plan to make ChatGPT more social.

It also follows the recent launch of GPT-5.1, which introduced faster “Instant” responses and deeper “Thinking” modes.

In September, OpenAI released Sora, a social video app that lets users create short clips to share on an algorithmic feed.

Together, these updates show a move toward group-centered digital experiences.

OpenAI says this release is only the beginning. The company expects ChatGPT to take a more active role in group conversations over time.

It plans to support more complex planning, creative work, and decision-making.
