Google has started placing ads in conversations with third-party AI chatbots. According to Bloomberg, the company tested this feature with AI search startups iAsk and Liner.
Now, it is expanding the program through its AdSense for Search platform.
The New Advertising Path
Google’s AdSense for Search now supports ads in AI chatbot conversations. This means users chatting with certain AI tools may see ads during their interactions.
And these ads appear as users ask questions or seek help.
These placements plan to show relevant ads based on the conversation. This makes the ad experience more targeted and personalized.
For advertisers, this is a new way to reach potential customers.
For example, someone chatting with an AI about hiking gear might see ads for backpacks or boots. The ad appears naturally within the chat, aligned with the topic.
Why Google Is Doing This
Google’s core business is search and advertising. However, more users now turn to AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity for quick answers.
These tools often replace traditional web searches. To adapt, Google is bringing ads into these AI platforms. This helps the company keep its ad revenue strong. It also allows Google to stay visible in the AI search space.
Last year, Google began adding ads to AI Overviews (AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some search results).
The company now takes the next step by showing ads in third-party AI chats.

Possible Concerns for Users
Some users may find ads in chats intrusive. Others may ignore them completely. Google will need to balance usefulness and user experience.
If done well, these ads could offer value. However, if not, they may feel disruptive. Users already see ads in social media, apps, and search results.
