Google has introduced a new way to use Gemini AI by allowing users to share their custom Gemini “Gems” with others.

Gems are personalized AI assistants designed for specific tasks. The change makes it possible to distribute them as easily as sharing a file in Google Drive.

Gems are tailored versions of Google’s Gemini AI. They allow users to write instructions that turn the system into role-specific assistants.

Google first introduced the feature through its Gemini Advanced subscription in 2024. At launch, Google provided several ready-made options.

These included a learning coach, a brainstorming assistant, a career guide, a writing editor, and a coding partner.

Each one showed how Gems could be shaped for personal or professional use. And in March 2025, Google expanded Gems to all users.

The company also added support for file uploads, which made the tool more flexible.

Sharing Gems

The new sharing feature builds on a familiar model. To share, users open the Gem manager in the web app. They then click the “Share” icon next to any Gem.

As with Google Drive, owners can decide who may view or use a Gem. They can also grant editing rights when needed.

This simple setup reduces barriers for new users and encourages wider adoption.

Before now, users often created duplicate Gems for the same purpose. For example, co-workers might each build a similar meeting assistant.

These versions could differ in small but important ways, but Gem sharing removes that problem. One Gem can now serve an entire team.

The feature also helps outside the workplace. Families can create shared meal planners. Friends can design travel guides together.

Accessibility

This update makes Gems easier for people who may not enjoy building their own assistants.

It’s a counter option to writing custom instructions. Instead, users can engage a Gem someone else has already created.

Consider a student who designs a “study partner” Gem with quizzes and flashcards. That Gem can be passed along to classmates.

Google confirmed that the feature is rolling out to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise subscribers. It will also be available in more than 150 countries.
