Meta has reorganized its AI division by splitting its AI team into two groups. Each will now have a clear and separate focus with the goal of building faster, smarter AI tools while staying competitive in a crowded market.

According to Axios, this change does not involve layoffs. Instead, Meta aims to improve productivity and efficiency by giving each team a specific mission.

Two Teams, Two Missions

The newly formed teams are:

  • AI Products Team– Focused on consumer-facing tools.
  • AGI Foundations Team– Concentrated on long-term AI development.

The AI Products group will continue building features for Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta’s new standalone AI app.

Users may already be familiar with AI-generated stickers, smart replies, and content suggestions. This team will expand those features.

The AGI Foundations group will work on future releases. Its main responsibility will be improving Meta’s Llama models.

These models are large language models (LLMs) designed to power more advanced AI systems. The team will also handle foundational research and development.

OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic continue to release advanced AI models and applications. Therefore, Meta must act quickly to keep up.

And this reorganization will help Meta do that. By separating near-term goals from long-term research, the company can move faster.

Also, focused teams can work without distraction, leading to quicker decisions and better outcomes.

The decision follows Meta’s recent LlamaCon event. There, the company showcased progress in its Llama models

It also launched the Llama for Startups program to encourage startups to use Meta’s tools to build generative AI applications.
