Meta has launched a sweeping reorganization of its AI operations. The company confirmed the changes this week, only days after reports suggested a major shake-up was underway.
The new unit will still operate as Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) but will consist of four divisions.Â
Each division will be tasked with streamlining operations and speeding up innovation.
The Four Divisions
- TBD Labs: This lab will be led by Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer and founder of Scale AI. This team will oversee foundation models such as the Llama series, which was last updated in April.
- Research Group: This group will focus on advancing scientific work and exploring future applications of AI.
- Product Integration Group: Tasked with integrating AI into Meta’s platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
- Infrastructure Group: This will be responsible for building and maintaining the computing power that supports large-scale AI projects.
Alexandr Wang
A central figure in this transition is Alexandr Wang. He joined Meta in June and quickly became one of its most influential leaders.
Wang is now in charge of TBD Labs, which is expected to lead development of foundation models.
His experience at Scale AI, where he specialized in machine learning data, makes him a strong fit for this role.Â
The AI Crackdown
The decision reflects growing pressure on Meta to keep pace with competitors. OpenAI has captured global attention with ChatGPT.
Google is advancing its Gemini platform. Anthropic is expanding with its Claude models. Meta has invested heavily in AI, but progress has been uneven.
Its Llama models are widely used in research and development. However, they have not yet matched the cultural impact of OpenAI or Google’s tools.
