OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT update includes a built-in image generator. Since launching on Tuesday, the tool has taken the internet by storm. Users have flooded social media with AI-generated images, many in Studio Ghibli’s iconic style. Even OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has joined the trend.

However, this unexpected demand has created a roadblock. OpenAI is delaying free-tier access. On Wednesday, Altman admitted the tool was “more popular than we expected.”

“Rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for a while,” Altman said.

Why the Delay?

The AI-powered image generator gained traction fast. As a result, OpenAI is struggling to keep up. The tool runs on GPT-4o, which introduces new capabilities. One major change is its “autoregressive approach” to image creation. Instead of generating images all at once, it builds them step by step, from left to right and top to bottom.

This method improves detail and consistency. However, it also requires more computing power. With so many users experimenting, the system is under strain. Right now, access is limited to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Free users will have to wait. Unfortunately, OpenAI has not shared a new launch date.

The Studio Ghibli-Style Image Trend

One surprise from this rollout is the explosion of Studio Ghibli inspired images. Users love how the AI mimics the studio’s dreamy, hand-drawn aesthetic. Social media is now filled with nostalgic landscapes and expressive characters.

The trend gained so much momentum that even Altman joined in. His AI-generated images added fuel to the fire. This viral popularity likely contributed to the high demand, which then led to the rollout delay.

What This Means for Free Users

For those using ChatGPT’s free tier, the delay is disappointing. Many were eager to experiment with AI-generated art. Now, they will have to wait. In the meantime, OpenAI is keeping text-based features available to free users.

Meanwhile, paying subscribers continue exploring GPT-4o’s expanded capabilities. If demand keeps growing, OpenAI may need to upgrade its infrastructure. Otherwise, usage limits might be necessary to ensure smooth performance.
