OpenAI has launched a new subscription tier in India called ChatGPT Go, priced at ₹399 ($4.60) per month.

It is far cheaper than the existing ChatGPT Plus plan, which costs ₹1,999 (around $23) in the country.

This follows the trend of a growing focus on India, the world’s most populous country.

By making the service more affordable, the company can expand access and attract new paying users.

India

India is one of OpenAI’s largest markets. Chief Executive Sam Altman recently confirmed that the country is second only to the United States in terms of user numbers.

According to analytics firm AppFigures, ChatGPT recorded more than 29 million downloads in India in the last 90 days.

But despite the high numbers, revenue remains modest. Within the same period, OpenAI earned only $3.6 million from Indian users.

This contrast reveals the millions of people in India who use ChatGPT but hesitate to upgrade to higher plans. The ChatGPT Go tier seeks to address that gap.

Features

Nick Turley, Vice President at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, explained the importance of the launch.

“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries,” he said.

The Go plan offers key upgrades over the free version. These include:

  • Ten times more access to messages, image generation, and file uploads.
  • Improved memory for more personalized responses.
  • UPI payments, which align with India’s most widely used digital payment system.

Competitors

OpenAI is entering a highly competitive environment; other AI firms are also tailoring their strategies for the Indian market.

  • Perplexity AI partnered with Airtel to provide free Pro subscriptions.
  • Google launched a one-year free AI Pro plan for Indian students.
  • Perplexity AI has provided live earnings call transcripts for publicly traded Indian companies.
