Tesla has quietly shut down its Dojo supercomputer team.

Just weeks ago, Elon Musk had said a second version, called Dojo 2, would kick off in 2026. But now, that’s no longer happening.

Instead, Tesla is putting its energy into new chips called AI5 and AI6.

Why Did Tesla Pull the Plug on Dojo?

Here’s What Musk Explained

Elon Musk stated in a post on X that all development paths led toward the AI6 chip.

Because of this, sticking with Dojo 2 felt like a step backwards.

Musk even joked that “Dojo 3” just has a lot of AI6 chips working together.

So, the Dojo team is being reassigned to other Tesla tech projects.

The D2 chip and its factory plans have been replaced by the AI5 and AI6 chips, which are being manufactured by TSMC and Samsung.

How Do Tesla’s New Chips Fit Together?

Chip NameMakerPurpose
AI5TSMCPowers Full Self-Driving in Tesla cars
AI6Samsung (Texas)Runs cars, humanoid robots, and AI training

The AI6 chip has a big job, whether it’s for driving, robots, or training big AI systems. Musk says it makes sense to focus everything on just that.

A Real-Life Comparison

Think of it like cooking:

You can focus on one awesome multi-tool kitchen gadget, or juggle multiple single-use tools that don’t quite match.

Tesla chose the one powerful gadget, the AI6 chip. It’s smarter and simpler to scale. It also cuts costs and wiring hassle in data centers.

What About Tesla’s Earlier Vision?

Musk first talked about Dojo back in 2019.

It was meant to be Tesla’s AI engine for self-driving and humanoid robots. Then, in August 2024, he shifted to promoting something called “Cortex,” a big AI project based in Austin.

It’s still unclear if that’s going ahead.

What’s Driving This Change?

Tesla is going through a rough patch. EV sales have dipped.

Plus, some of Musk’s political moves have hurt the brand’s image. He’s trying to keep faith alive in Tesla’s AI vision, even though a June robotaxi launch in Austin didn’t go smoothly.

Final Thoughts

Tesla’s move to retire Dojo shows a clear pivot: simplify, unify, and go all-in on versatile chips.

It’s a bet that AI5 and AI6 will be the glue holding Tesla’s future together, from cars to robots to data centers.
