Google is getting ready to introduce a major update to its Android design language. The update, called ‘Material 3 Expressive’, is expected to be officially revealed at the upcoming Google I/O developer conference.
The launch was initially meant to be a surprise. However, an event schedule and an early blog post published by mistake, but saved by Wayback Machine, have given the public a first look at what’s coming.
What Is Material 3 Expressive?
Material 3 Expressive is the next evolution of Google’s well-known design system, Material Design.
First introduced in 2014, Material Design was planned to bring consistency, beauty, and usability to Android apps. And over the years, it has evolved.
In May 2021, Google launched Material You (also called Material 3), which allowed users to personalize their Android devices by adjusting color palettes based on their wallpaper.
Now, Google’s new design system focuses on creating emotional connections. The leaked blog post described the reason behind the development. It detailed how using “bold shapes and color” crafts “delightful user experiences.”
In short, Google wants design to feel more human.
On Developers and Users
Design updates like this one are not just cosmetic. They directly influence how apps feel and function. Developers will need to learn the new system. They’ll need to rethink how users interact with buttons, colors, menus, and more.
- Developers can expect new design rules and updated UI kits. Google plans to share alpha code and design files during I/O so developers can start early.
- Users may notice apps that feel more lively, colorful, and easier to use, especially for older adults or those with visual challenges.
Google’s blog emphasized this point. They said the expressive design helps guide users toward important actions. Studies have also shown that eye-catching details improve performance and make apps easier to navigate, especially for seniors.

What We Know
Google has not shared full technical details yet. However, some insights are already available from the event schedule and leaked post:
- The design focuses on emotional engagement.
- It uses bold color and shape to draw attention.
- It aims to boost usability and accessibility.
- This development is informed by user testing and research.
The upcoming I/O session is titled “Build Next-Level UX with Material 3 Expressive.” According to the description, the session will teach developers how to use emotional design patterns to improve app engagement and desirability.
Not a One-Size-Fits-All Approach
Although the new design encourages expressiveness, Google warns against overuse. It’s not meant to replace all existing design systems. Developers still need to follow well-known patterns and maintain consistency with platform standards.
In other words, creativity is welcome, but so is obedience to existing design rules.
A Timeline for Release
Google is expected to roll out Material 3 Expressive later this year. First, the company will present it at Google I/O. Then, developers will begin testing. After that, a public release will follow.
