According to TechCrunch, the Google Gemini app just crossed 1 billion monthly active users. CEO Sundar Pichai shared the news on X, calling Gemini one of Google’s fastest-growing products ever.
He also pointed out that Gemini is now the 14th Google product to reach 1 billion users.
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s ChatGPT hit the same 1 billion mark back in June 2026. So now, both major AI chatbots sit at the same level.
Google has been weaving Gemini into everything – search, workspace, Android phones, and even its own standalone app. This everywhere-at-once strategy seems to be paying off.
Google’s AI Mode in Search has its own huge audience. It topped 1 billion monthly users also, but search users don’t count toward this Gemini figure.
New Tools
Google has been busy building. The company recently rolled out Gemini 3.5 Flash, a model that focuses on two things: better coding help and smarter AI agents that can work on their own.
Agents are a big deal right now given how hands-off and autonomous they are. Google seems to be getting in on that, as chatbots that only chat may soon feel old-fashioned.
Gemini

A full 63% of Gemini users choose to speak to the assistant instead of typing. Gemini now creates more than 150 million images every single day.
Although you might assume Gemini only thrives on Android, Google says Gemini now has over 100 million active users on iOS.
Apple users have plenty of AI options already. Siri lives on every iPhone and ChatGPT has a strong presence, yet Gemini still found a way to grow fast on a platform it doesn’t own.
This announcement lands right after Google’s Q2 2026 earnings call. During that call, the company revealed it had over 950 million monthly Gemini users.
Daily active users had tripled over the past year. So this billion-user milestone was already on the horizon.
The timing also lines up with something else. Google’s Made by Google event is coming up soon.
Expect more Gemini features to show up on Pixel phones. The company seems determined to make Gemini feel less like an app and more like a built-in part of daily life.
