Google has launched a new experimental feature called Search Live. It allows users to have real-time voice conversations with its AI chatbot directly through the search engine.

This development is currently available to selected users in the United States through Google Labs.

The feature is part of AI Mode, which aims to make search more interactive. Users can now ask questions out loud and receive spoken answers, continuing the exchange naturally through follow-up voice queries.

For now, the feature is voice-only. However, Google plans to add camera integration in the coming months.

Search Live runs on a custom version of Gemini, Google’s advanced AI model. It operates within the Google app on both Android and iOS devices.

To access it, users must first join the AI Mode experiment in Google Labs. After enabling it, tapping the new “Live” icon beneath the search bar opens the voice chat interface.

From there, users can begin speaking directly to Google. For example, asking “How do I paint my walls?” will generate an audio response.

A follow-up question, such as “What if it smudges?” continues the conversation seamlessly.

Also, during this process, the system displays helpful links on the screen.

Practical Uses

Search Live supports both casual and practical queries. You can ask for travel tips, cooking suggestions, or packing advice.

The system responds verbally and supplements the conversation with relevant search results.

This function is particularly useful in multitasking scenarios. For instance, a user cooking dinner can ask for recipe tips without needing to touch their phone.

Google also plans to enhance this experience by enabling camera input. Soon, users will be able to point their phone at an object and ask questions about it, receiving both spoken answers and search links.

A Seamless Experience

Search Live does not interrupt other app use. It runs in the background and allows users to switch between apps while continuing the voice chat.

This makes the tool more flexible and accessible in real-world settings. Users can also view a full transcript of the conversation.

They may choose to respond by typing, offering more control over how they interact with the AI.

All previous conversations are saved to the AI Mode history to help users return to previous topics without restarting the session.

Google’s Strategy

The company is gradually transforming search into a more conversational, real-time experience. Google is integrating AI directly into its widely used search platform. This gives it a unique advantage in reaching everyday users.

Other technology leaders are also advancing in this area:

  • OpenAI launched Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT last year.
  • Anthropic introduced voice features in its Claude app in May.
  • Apple is developing an AI-powered Siri, though it has faced delays due to reliability concerns.
