Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently stated that 20% to 30% of the company’s code is now generated by AI tools. He made this comment during a conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta’s LlamaCon event.
Zuckerberg had asked how much of Microsoft’s current code is created using AI. Nadella responded with a clear estimate and added that results vary across programming languages.
AI Performs Better in Python Than in C++
Nadella noted that AI tools generate better code in some languages than in others. Specifically, Python shows strong performance, however, C++ remains more challenging for AI systems.
Google Reports Similar Trends
Microsoft is not alone in using AI for software development. Recently, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that over 30% of Google’s code is now AI-generated.
However, both companies have not detailed how they measure AI-generated code. It is unclear whether they count lines accepted by developers, suggestions offered, or full-code completions. Therefore, these numbers should be viewed as general indicators rather than precise metrics.
Meta’s Numbers Remain Unknown
When asked about AI’s role at Meta, Zuckerberg admitted he did not know how much of the company’s code is AI-generated. This suggests Meta may not be tracking it in the same way, or the data may not be publicly available yet.
The Future
While Nadella discussed the present, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott has made a bold prediction. He expects AI will generate 95% of all code by 2030. This estimate is a direct reflection of the rapid adoption of AI tools.
