OpenAI has officially made its powerful AI-driven image generator available to all users, according to CEO Sam Altman. Previously, this feature was only accessible to paid subscribers of ChatGPT.

While the exact limit for free users remains unclear, Altman previously hinted at a daily cap of three images.
Surge in Demand Crashes GPUs
Since its launch, OpenAI’s image generation tool has seen an explosion in demand. Altman even joked that the company’s GPUs were “melting” due to high usage.
The tool quickly gained attention for its ability to transform images into the signature style of Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli, sparking copyright discussions.
Ethical Concerns and Fake Image Generation
Beyond artistic transformations, some users have tested the tool in questionable ways, such as generating fake receipts and restaurant bills. In response, OpenAI stated that all AI-generated images contain metadata marking them as AI-created.
The company also reassured users that it actively monitors and removes content that violates its policies.
OpenAI Hits Major Milestones
Alongside this expansion, OpenAI has secured a massive $40 billion funding round led by SoftBank, bringing its valuation to an estimated $300 billion. Additionally, ChatGPT continues its rapid growth, now boasting:
- 500 million weekly active users
- 700 million monthly active users
With these new developments, OpenAI solidifies its position as a leader in AI innovation. The expansion of its image generator could redefine how users interact with AI-powered creativity.
